Joshua (Joseph) Carter (1797-8 May 1851) married Sarah Penrite (1801-22 Dec 1881). Joshua Carter was the second child born to Joseph Carter and Margaret (Hinshaw) Carter. He was born ca 1797 in Surry Co., NC and died May 8, 1851 in Surry Co., NC. He was married March 29, 1821 to Sarah Pinrite. Surrey County Marriage Bonds Abstracts A-Z 1780-1860. Pages 1-257, 1-86 (information on front of reel) shows Carter, Joshua and Sarah Pinright 29-3-1821 with William Mackie listed below (witness?) They were the parents of five known children.

1. Isaac Carter was born ca 1822 and died May 28, 1899 in Clay Co., North Carolina. He married Martha Ann Wilson Dec. 19, 1844. Martha Ann Wilson was from Guilford County, North Carolina. Isaac fought in the Civil War and served in the Commissary.
2. Joseph Wilson Carter was born Dec. 23, 1823 in Surry Co., NC and died May 18, 1901. He married Abigail Reynolds.
3. Margaret D. Carter was born ca 1830 in Surry Co., NC
4. Benjamin Frank Carter was born ca 1838 in Yadkin Co., NC and died in Clay County, NC. He was married to Arty Styles and served in the Civil War.
5. Mary Jane Carter was born June 5, 1844 in Surry Co., NC and died May 26, 1924 in Cherokee County, NC. She was married to William H. A. Greenwood.

Sanders shows up as Joshua S. on the 1860 Census for Cherokee County, NC.
